A Pigeon on the Road

[Christ on the Cross ll, Jean Arp]

Pigeon on the Road

–mickey morgan

We didn’t go back.

We drove on,

If we hadn’t

we would have missed something

precisely in line with our right-front tire,

We swerved seeing you.

I remember your face.

Was something broken?

All day I thought of your face.

I sat behind your eyes and watched

in horror

Black rolling boulders

zoom to your face

suddenly swerve

And roar past you.

until one went through you.

But we didn’t go back
