Limbo

Ecce Homo, Antonello da Messsina, 1470

[Ecce Homo Antonello da Messina, 1470]

Limbo

You tell me he killed himself because of deep

melancholy. He never felt he had achieved enough.

You cover your mouth and look away,

breathing down into the green chair

and I know you can’t bear it.

The room says nothing to you. You rise and move

to the edge of the hall, standing there

with your back to me. You do not go into the hall

or back to the chair. You stay there shifting

an uneven sway from foot to foot.

Your body could go in any direction.

A feline readiness.

But you stay unbearably long.
