Huitenshil Steppe by Sendoo Haada, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

A Magical Horse

Huitenshil, my childhood paradise

Scenery of white yurts, blue smoke

An elegant horse

And now, you are my Paradise Lost.

Your sheep wheezing in the fence.

I saw moonlight

on your haystacks.

Huitenshil, your sweet-smelling grasses,

taller than the sheep of autumn.

The wind blows,

the goshawk volley wings

in the air.

And over there

snow

light as cream

drapes an ovoo*

*Ovoo (a Mongolian word), an ovoo (heap) is a sacred cairn found in Mongolian shamanic religious traditions, usually made from rocks with wood or from wood. Ovoos are often found at the top of mountains and in high places, like mountain passes.
